Carpet Allergies

What is swept under the rug about carpet allergies?

Is it the carpet or what hides in the fibers that is making you feel miserable?

Carpet fibers are magnets to things like dust mites, pet dander, dust, mold, dirt and pollen tracked in from outdoors.

Allergens from the outside that affect you can be just as big of a problem indoors. Walking inside after you’ve traipsed through your yard, may lead to a hefty amount of pollen and dust coming in as uninvited guests. Where does that pollen and dust go? It joins with the dust mites and Rover’s dander already partying in those plush fibers.

Of course, those darn dust mites don’t need any help from other allergens to kick off your runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. These microscopic arthropods are the main cause of year-round allergies. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, more than 20 million Americans are allergic to these little buggers.

Cuter than dust mites, but perhaps no less aggravating to your allergies is Rover’s dander. The dead skin, or dander, of our furry companions love to hide in the carpet. Pet dander is almost as hard to get rid of as dust mites. The dander is sticky and tends to cling to the fibers.

Besides dust mites and Rover, mold is another common cause of indoor allergies. In regions with high humidity and areas in the house that tend to hold water (like the refrigerator pan and washing machines) can all be a factor in the growth of mold. Even shampooing or damp cleaning your carpet can promote the spread of mold and mildew if you don't dry it thoroughly.

On the other hand, carpets provide many benefits. Yes! Even for those with allergies. Carpet fibers are magnets but they also act much like a filter, trapping allergens and keeping them out of the air you and your family breathe. These trapped allergens, such as pollen, pet dander and dust, can then easily be removed through professional cleaning.

Once a year clean your carpet using hot water extraction by a professional. This process extracts deeply embedded dirt that regular vacuuming can’t reach. So, before you spend a lot of money taking out your home’s carpet, remember why you installed it in the first place. And for those times of the year when nothing can bring your relief from allergies, try a natural remedy to get you through those sneezy, watery eyes, headachy days.
