Fall Seasonal Allergies

seasonal allergies

It’s fall. The weather is cooler, the air fresher and the sky bluer but you feel miserable thanks to ragweed and mold. But is it just these seasonal allergens triggering your runny nose and itchy eyes? Here are a few other lesser known facts about fall allergies and what you can do to keep the tissues in the tissue box.

Don’t rake those leaves. As autumn rolls into winter people fight a continuous battle of keeping yards, gutters, drainage ditches and driveways leaf free. Allergy suffers have another fight with the leaves. Raking leaves throughout the fall stirs up all the pollen and mold on the ground aggravating allergies even further. If you suffer from fall allergies and can’t afford to hire the neighborhood kid to tend to your yard look into purchasing a mask to filter out pollen and molds.

Don’t go out on windy days. Ragweed, also known at allergic rhinitis, is a common cause of hay fever. This plant pollenates in mid-August and can continue to be a problem until a hard freeze. On windy days the pollen can take to the air and put a fine layer of yellowish dust on everything. Keep your windows and doors closed and if you do venture outside take a shower and leave your shoes at the door.

Don’t ignore school allergens. Fall means back to school and students can be exposed to all sorts of irritants that can trigger any number of allergies. These irritants include classroom pets, chalk dust, and molds growing in the ventilation systems. Students who suffer from food allergies need to be careful in lunch rooms and cafeterias. Students who are at risk from exercise-induced asthma may experience attacks during gym or recess. Make sure the students and educators understand what can trigger allergies and/or asthma, and how they can take precautions.

Don’t hope for a lot of Indian summer days. Those fall days when temperatures rise and the humidity comes back before the final days of summer are lost to old man winter may be wonderful for some but for allergy suffers you will find little relief. Unseasonably warm weather will make ragweed linger. Mold spores like nothing better than when humidity is highest. Dry, windy days unleash an extra level of pollen that can make any person effected by allergies absolutely miserable.

Don’t let fall get in the way of enjoying the season. Get those allergies under control and enjoy the cooler days ahead. Consider a  natural seasonal allergy remedy to help build your immune system for your battle against fall allergies.
