Is Your Gut Healthy?

Posted

Is your gut healthy – or do you need gastrointestinal support!

Most people experience bloating, constipation or diarrhea. Some on a daily basis. What do we do when this happens? We reach for the Tums or a laxative or anti-bloat pills. These are great for a quick fix but in the long run, if you have an unhealthy gut, you need to fix it.

There are other signs that your gut is out of sync; such as constantly being sick, food allergies, headaches and achy joints. Let’s take the test and see what your gut it trying to tell you.

How often do you get sick?

The digestive system plays a huge role with our immune system. In a balanced gut the microbes work with the immune cells or T cells to protect us from foreign substances and bad bugs. The good bacteria keeps the bad bacteria in check. When the bad bacteria over takes the good the immune system can be compromised. To help out the gut we need to replenish the good gut bacteria.

Do you have painful joints?

What causes rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune condition that targets the joints, no one knows. Researchers think the answer can be found in the gut. Remember, the gut plays a major role with our immune system. Recent studies have shown that people suffering from RA have poor gut function. Bloating, diarrhea and constipation are signs of gut distress caused by too much bad bacteria. When the bad bacteria overtakes the gut, it can also lead to inflammation. RA has also been linked to inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease – again autoimmune conditions that are linked to an unhealthy gut.

Do you seem to gain weight easier than once upon a time?

There is no documented proof that links weight gain to an unhealthy gut but studies show people who are prone to weight gain are also prone to intestinal maladies. Scientists ran a test on mice, giving them microbes from an obese person. The mice became obese, even though they were fed less. A further study showed that when obese people starting eating healthier and cleaned up their gut the microbes in their insides looked more like the microbes in lean people.

Have you taken antibiotics?

Though antibiotics have their purpose, they kill off bad bugs as well as beneficial bacteria. This upsets the natural balance of the gut – letting the bad overtake the good. Understand that we always have bad bacteria in our gut but when there is a healthy balance we don’t notice it. It’s when the good bacteria – for whatever reason – becomes outnumbered by the bad that trouble starts. Toxins in the gut will trigger bloating, diarrhea, inflammation, headaches and other issues. If you have taken antibiotics you need to build back the good bacteria.

Bloating, gas, or any upset gut is no fun. Changing a few things in your diet can help restore the balance of good bacteria vs bad bacteria. Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables. Buy yogurt that has live bacterial culture. Eat less red meat, processed foods and sugars. Processed foods and sugars will kill you.
