Lyme Disease Symptoms and Cures

Posted

A Quick Review of Lyme Disease Symptoms

We would love to start by telling you the 5 simple ways to know you have Lyme Disease. Unfortunately this is not possible and anyone who tries to tell you different is ignorant of the facts.

What is known about Lyme Disease:

  1. It is transmitted by the bite of certain ticks and can happen anywhere. A tick can attach itself to a host in New York and travel with that host to Colorado or anywhere else in the world!
  2. Less that 50% of patients with the disease remember having a tick bite! In some studies this number is below 15%. This means many have Lyme Disease without knowing it, and do not seek medical help until the condition becomes very serious.
  3. The disease is actually caused by a spiral shaped bacteria called a spirochete (Borrelia Burdorferi) which can cause infection in multiple organs and produce a wide range of symptoms.
  4. Although many believe the disease can be easily recognized by a ìbulls-eyeî rash, fewer than 50% of patients recall any rash at all.
  5. Many patients suffering from Lyme Disease require prolonged treatments. Relapses are common and re-treatment must be undertaken.
  6. At the current time, there are no tests available to prove a patient with Lyme Disease is cured!

What does this all say to you, especially if you live in an area known for the ticks which predominantly carry the disease?

Don't get it!

Protect Yourself From Lyme Disease

The best cure is prevention! Try these steps to stop the ticks from infecting you.

  • Wear light colored clothing to easily see and remove ticks.
  • Wear closed shoes or boots, long sleeved shirts, and tuck pant legs into socks or boots to protect your legs.
  • Stay on the trail and out of the woods! Ticks drop onto host from branches, tall grass etc.
  • Pull back long hair into a ponytail and/or wear a hat.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and use a 20-30% DEET insect repellant.

When you get home be sure to check everywhere for ticks. They are very small (head of a pin size!) and love to get into warm moist areas. Behind the ears, groin area, behind the knees and under the arms.

And if you do find a rash - head for the clinic!
