Children’s allergies – Mom to the Rescue

Children are susceptible to all sorts of allergies. They are under attack from inside and outside. Tree and grass pollens, insects that sting or bite, foods they eat and or irritants which can inflame the skin are all to blame. Our children have symptoms of swelling, running eyes and a constant stuffy nose, itchy rashes and headaches that can turn into secondary infections. As parents, we suffer right along with them. So, let’s see what we can do to keep those allergens to a minimum.

Mom to the rescue!

Find out what your child is allergic to and avoid it.(Duh)

If your child is allergic to pollen, keep windows shut during the height of the pollen season, especially on those windy days when pollen counts are through the roof. Have everyone leave their shoes at the front door. You would be surprised at the amount of pollen and mold tracked into your home from the yard.

Wash bedding, pillows and stuffed animals regularly in hot water and dry in a hot dryer to keep the dust mites at bay. And while we are talking washing – have your child bathe after coming in from outside to wash those annoying allergens down the drain.

Clean drains and any place in the house that can hold standing water with a mild bleach solution to stop mold from growing and sending creeper spores into the air.

Indoor plants are also great producers of mold – silk flowers can be a pleasant replacement and there is no watering involved. It’s hard to kill a silk plant.

Pets are a wonderful addition to your home but before you bring home Rover, look into a breed that doesn’t shed as much or not at all. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic animal but some are a better option than others for children who suffer pet allergies.

Use your vacation time to visit the beach or a lake.

If your child is a sports enthusiast guide them toward Tae Kwon Do or indoor rock climbing to avoid the soccer and baseball fields.

When allergies kick in big time set up those board games or build a pillow fort to help take their minds off how icky they are feeling.

An allergist can help determine what your child is allergic to. Natural allergy remedies that target the allergens in your specific area can also be an option. Mom to the rescue!
