Your Thyroid - What is hypothyroidism?

First, do you know what your thyroid does or looks like? Your thyroid produces a hormone that travels through your

blood to all parts of your body. It is shaped like a small butterfly and sits just below your Adam’s apple at the base of your neck. Your thyroid stays very busy with such jobs as controlling how fast your heart beats or how fast calories are burned.

Hypothyroidism happens when not enough thyroid hormones are being made to meet your body’s needs. Some doctors refer to it as underactive thyroid. This slows down many of your body's functions.

Hashimoto’s disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. When this disease is present the immune system mistakenly turns on the thyroid. The damaged thyroid can no longer make enough hormones to keep up with your body’s metabolism.
